subcello

"SubCello" is a photo taken at the beginning of this year by my university colleague Patricio Isaías. The photo shows a student of our faculty practicing cello in the building basement.

A picture is worth a thousand words. It's not always true, but in this case the image evokes me an explosion of different ideas. It's very interesting. What strikes me is the many things in this photo that are representing an appalling situation for the art education. In first place, the simple fact that she isn't studying in a classroom. Second, she is using the stairs for two things: put her scores and engage the endpin of cello to prevent the slipping of it. And finally, she had to leave her books on the floor probably because there wasn't a table for them. It's really sad.

For me, this photo represents the devaluation of arts education and remember me that in this country the arts aren't understood as a human need.
